Midori and Pink Flowering Gum

Midori sat for this portrait which is one of a series of paintings that I am creating under the working title ‘Wild Flowers'. In this body of work I am exploring the cultural diversity of young Australians. Midori, born in Australia, is of Zimbabwean and Australian heritage, she chose the Pink Flowering Gum as her ‘Wild Flower’, a symbol of her mother and Australian identity. She arranged the blossom branches on her head to reflect African tribal head dress as a way to pay homage to her father and African heritage. Midori is a proud young woman and has often felt displaced and discriminated against in Australia simply because of her physical appearance. My aim with this body of work is to celebrate the diversity of cultures within our population and highlight the unique beauty they share with our native flora.
